The distribution of news and information is changing and teaching and learning methods are embracing technology. Young people know better than anyone that they can now learn on the bus, at home, in the park or on the go. Parents also receive their daily news on their mobile phones, their computers and even gaming consoles.
In line with this, Schools and local councils should be updating the way they communicate with young people and Parents. Open Minds Theatre Company can teach your pupils how to create a professional audio or video pod cast, editing it with musical beds, adding pictures, photos or documents and finally releasing it to the world via a feed. Members of the community can subscribe to these feeds on a computer or hand-held device such as a mobile phone and will automatically receive the new pod cast when the feed is updated.
The benefits are:
· News is quickly sent to important stakeholders at no cost.
· Information about the school reaches a wider/global audience.
· The profile of the school is raised.
· Educational content can be made available to anyone, at any time, anywhere.
Young people take ownership of this communication method and learn important skills directly related to the curriculum;
Researching worthy news stories (literacy)
Writing a script (literacy)
Performing the Podcast (speaking and listening/ Drama)
Judging the length and timings of different elements of the pod cast , such as Intro, musical bed, Vox-pops, interviews (numeracy)
Learning about broadcasting and rules. Such as copyright, ethics, internet safety, bias, style and content (literacy, ICT, citizenship, PSHE, Religious studies.
Why us? Our delivery staff have years of experience of teaching Media Studies (Head of Department), Drama (Head of department) and English at Key stage 2 to 5. They have been teaching young people how to create and disseminate Pod casts right up to exam level. Some schools have even used the subsequently trained pupils to broadcast a weekly Radio Station over the web.
Taught over a full morning, afternoon or after school, you can hand over your school communications to your Pod cast team.
